NYD

NYD or necessity is associated with the triple goddesses in Northern European mythology called the Norns or the Wyrd Sisters. On a material level it refers to the desire for material goods that is the curse of our consumer society.

It encompasses the idea that a materialistic outlook restricts a person in both a spiritual and physical sense. While it is wrong to totally reject the material world and the pleasures it offers this rune advises the querent that he or she should take a more balanced view of his needs.

On another level in a reading it means that the person concerned may have reached a point in his life where he must face up to his Wyrd. This could refer to a 'dark night of the soul' or possibly an illness that forces him to face some pretty unpalatable facts about himself and the direction he is taking.
